Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Technology Holding Company (CEO Baek Ki‑tae, Vice‑President of Industry‑University Cooperation) achieved a virtuous‑cycle outcome in university technology commercialization by supporting faculty startup and its subsidiary, Bioid Co., Ltd., in securing investment and selling part of its equity stake. The company, founded on the university's research outcomes, was supported in its growth, and the attraction of private investment and recovery of investment proceeds established a foundation to back new technology startups.
JBNU Technology Holding Company recently held a memorandum of understanding (MOU) ceremony to commemorate Bioid Co., Ltd.'s (CEOs Hyung‑Kwan Jang and Min Kang) successful fundraising and a 120‑fold equity exit (EXIT), and to support its subsequent growth.
Attendees at the event included Lee Dong‑heon, Executive Vice‑President of JBNU; Baek Ki‑tae, Vice‑President of Industry‑University Cooperation and CEO of the Technology Holding Company; Park Sam‑bok, Deputy Vice‑President of Research Support; Bioid CEOs Hyung‑Kwan Jang and Min Kang; and Ji‑young Jang, CEO of Rising S Ventures, among others.
This year Bioid secured Pre‑A stage investment from six investors, including Rising S Ventures, NongHyup Bank, and the Small and Medium Business Corporation. In the process, Rising S Ventures acquired part of the Bioid equity held by JBNU Technology Holding Company, allowing the holding company to convert its subsidiary nurturing achievements into an actual recovery of investment funds.
Founded in November 2019, Bioid was incorporated as the sixth subsidiary of JBNU Technology Holding Company in November 2020. Based on a third‑generation viral vector vaccine platform, the company conducts R&D on veterinary pharmaceuticals and performs diagnosis and testing for animal diseases.
Following its selection for the Deep Tech TIPS program in 2024, Bioid transferred avian influenza preventive vaccine technology to Komipharm in 2025 and has pursued collaborative research with Harim this year, among other technology commercialization achievements. These results helped lead to follow‑on investment and broadened the company’s growth opportunities.
This equity exit is meaningful as the result of end‑to‑end support for technology commercialization—from identifying promising university technologies and nurturing startup companies to linking with private investors and recovering investment funds. In particular, the recovered funds create a basis for reinvestment in new technology startups and for fostering promising companies, which is expected to enhance the sustainability of the university startup ecosystem.
On the day of the ceremony, JBNU, Bioid, and Rising S Ventures also signed a three‑party MOU. The three organizations agreed to strengthen cooperation to support Bioid’s continued growth and expansion into global markets.
Building on this momentum, JBNU Technology Holding Company plans to expand the commercialization of excellent research outcomes within the university and to identify promising faculty‑ and student‑led startups. It will also strengthen links with private investors to support follow‑on fundraising and the growth of its subsidiaries.
CEO Baek Ki‑tae said, 'This achievement demonstrates that the university’s excellent research outcomes can translate into tangible investment results through technology startups and corporate growth. Going forward, the Technology Holding Company will continue to lead as a core platform for university technology commercialization, supporting the growth of promising subsidiaries and building a sustainable virtuous‑cycle ecosystem in which investment returns lead to new technology startups and follow‑on investment.'
