JBNU G-Lamp Project Group (Director Lee Jeong-hwan) participated in the '2026 Korea Science Festival with Jeonbuk Science Festival,' held October 16–18, 2026, at Jeonju University's Main Stadium and Harim Mission Hall. The group operated a hands-on demonstration program featuring hydrogen vehicles using water electrolysis and hydrogen fuel cells.
Marking its 20th year, the Jeonbuk Science Festival was held together with the Korea Science Festival under the theme 'A Moving World, A New Future Opened by Physical AI.' According to the official press release, 86 institutions, universities, and companies participated and 112 experience and exhibition booths were set up so that provincial residents and young people could encounter a variety of advanced science and technologies up close.
At Booth B37 in the Science and Technology Hall, the JBNU G-Lamp Project Group presented a program under the theme 'Hydrogen Energy: A Future 1°C Cooler Than Today.' The program allowed participants to experience a power unit operating using hydrogen fuel cells, introducing hydrogen energy technology through the familiar context of automobiles.
The focus of the hands-on demonstrations and trials was the production of hydrogen through water electrolysis and the process of using it to drive a vehicle. By showing the series of steps by which hydrogen obtained from water is used to power a car, visitors could connect hydrogen production and utilization. It concretely conveyed scientific principles by allowing attendees to observe the invisible energy conversion through the vehicle's movement.
In particular, the Project Group provided age-appropriate instruction for a wide range of participants, from kindergarteners to elementary, middle and high school students. The depth and mode of explanation were adjusted to match participants' ages and levels of understanding, and the principles of water electrolysis and hydrogen energy utilization were linked to the hands-on demonstrations. This enabled children unfamiliar with scientific concepts and teenagers who had studied related topics alike to understand and participate at their own levels.
Also, as a platform for the university to share scientific knowledge with the local community, the event helped children and youths become familiar with future energy technologies. By combining a concrete hands-on subject, the hydrogen vehicle, with age-targeted explanations, the Project Group increased accessibility to science.
Lee Jeong-hwan, Director of the JBNU G-Lamp Project Group, said, 'This program was designed so that participants from kindergarten through elementary, middle and high school can understand the principles of hydrogen energy and enjoy science at their own level. I hope the experience of a car moving on hydrogen obtained from water will lead to curiosity and inquiry in science.'
He added, 'I would like to express my deep gratitude to Professors Kim Dong-yeon (Department of Chemistry), Ra Yong-ho (Division of Advanced Materials Engineering (Information Materials Engineering)), and Kim Seong-seop (Division of Chemical Engineering), the graduate students, and the Project Group staff who supported program preparation and site operation. The dedication and effort of everyone who explained and assisted participants according to the students' levels made the program even more meaningful.'
Meanwhile, the event was jointly hosted by the Ministry of Science and ICT, Jeollabuk-do Provincial Government, and the Jeollabuk-do Office of Education, and was organized by the Korea Foundation for the Advancement of Science and Creativity, Jeonbuk Technopark, and the Jeonbuk Science Culture Hub Center.
