Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Division of Electronics and Information Engineering doctoral student Eun‑jin Son and master's student Ju‑ha Park (supervisor: Professor Sang‑jun Lee) were selected for the Graduate Student Research Incentive Program supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea.
The National Research Foundation of Korea's Graduate Student Research Incentive Program supports creative and challenging research by domestic graduate students. It is a flagship program intended to cultivate the next generation of researchers who will lead future scholarship and technology.
Eun‑jin Son was selected for the doctoral student research incentive and will receive KRW 25 million per year in research funding for 24 months. Ju‑ha Park was selected for the master's student research incentive and will receive KRW 12 million in research funding for 12 months.
Eun‑jin Son will conduct research titled "Self‑Supervised Learning‑Based Amodal Segmentation Technology for Object Shape Restoration." Amodal segmentation is a technique that recognizes an object's full shape by inferring occluded parts in camera images even when portions of the object are hidden by other objects.
This research aims to overcome the limitations of conventional visible‑region‑based object recognition techniques and to develop a deep learning model that can more accurately understand physical space even in environments with complex occlusions.
Ju‑ha Park will carry out a study entitled "Non‑contact Stress Estimation via Multi‑physiological Signal Estimation from Facial Video." The research seeks to estimate multiple physiological signals, such as heart rate and respiration, from facial video alone in a non‑contact manner, and to develop a deep‑learning‑based model to determine stress states based on those estimates.
In particular, the project aims to develop technology that operates robustly in real‑world environments, including under varying illumination conditions.
Doctoral student Eun‑jin Son and master's student Ju‑ha Park said, "We are grateful to Professor Sang‑jun Lee for his support and encouragement throughout the selection process," and added, "We will carry out the research projects diligently and produce outcomes that contribute to national technological development."
