The IEEE MTT-S Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Student Branch (IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques‑Society Jeonbuk National University Student Branch Chapter, Student Representative: Thorng Palaystint (Graduate School, Division of Electronics and Information Engineering, PhD Program), Advising Professor: Yong‑Chae Jeong (Division of Electronic Engineering)) held a special lecture on August 31, inviting Professor Chung‑Tse Michael Wu of the Department of Electrical Engineering at National Taiwan University.
The lecture, titled "Sensing, Tracking, and Secured Communication with Artificial Electromagnetic Materials," covered the fundamental principles of metamaterials and recent research examples applying them to sensing, imaging, radar, and secure wireless communications.
Professor Michael Wu first explained the basic concepts of left‑handed and composite right/left‑handed (CRLH) transmission lines and described how such structures are applied to leaky‑wave antennas that can scan beams with frequency. He then presented practical research cases of metamaterial‑based antennas used for multi‑target radar sensing, biosignal and position detection, and microwave imaging technologies.
He also introduced harmonic beam steering and directional modulation techniques using space‑time coding and digitally controlled metamaterial antennas. He explained the principles of physical‑layer security technology that deliver signals normally to intended receivers while distorting them in other directions to reduce the risk of eavesdropping.
In the latter part of the lecture, he discussed convergence research between microwave technology and artificial intelligence. Professor Wu introduced learning‑based space‑time coding techniques and reconfigurable RF analog processors for implementing microwave artificial neural networks, suggesting prospects for future intelligent RF and microwave systems.
Through the lecture, participating students had the opportunity to understand how basic microwave and electromagnetic theories can extend to various advanced technologies such as radar sensing, biometric monitoring, microwave imaging, secure communications, and RF‑based artificial intelligence.
The lecture was organized and financially supported by IEEE MTT‑S with participation from the JBNU Student Branch. As the only such student branch in Korea, the IEEE MTT‑S JBNU Student Branch plans to continue arranging technical seminars and academic exchange activities by inviting domestic and international researchers to broaden students' research perspectives and strengthen their international research capabilities.
