Professor Garam Kim of the Department of Korean Language at JBNU Namwon Glocal Campus has published, through the King Sejong Institute, the special-course textbooks 'Sejong Institute: Korean for Study in Korea 1·2' for foreign learners preparing to study in Korea.

The King Sejong Institute is an institution under the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism established to provide Korean language education overseas and promote Korean culture. It currently operates in 273 locations across 89 countries worldwide. In 2025 alone, approximately 240,000 foreigners studied Korean at the King Sejong Institute, establishing it as a core institution for the global dissemination of the Korean language and culture.

Recently, learners at the King Sejong Institute have diversified their reasons for studying Korean beyond cultural interest to include studying in Korea, migration, and employment. As a result, demand has risen for curricula addressing the practical needs of university life and academic work. These textbooks were developed in response to that shift to help overseas learners prepare for study in Korea and adapt stably to university life.

'Sejong Institute: Korean for Study in Korea 1' focuses on communicative content necessary for preparation to study abroad and adapting to life in Korea. 'Sejong Institute: Korean for Study in Korea 2' is designed to develop the Korean language skills required for academic performance at university, such as listening to lectures, reading scholarly materials, and writing reports. Reflecting the culture and actual academic environment of Korean universities, the books focus on reducing the linguistic and cultural difficulties learners may encounter after admission.

Professor Kim said, "A freshman from Kyrgyzstan who studied 'Sejong Korean' at the King Sejong Institute in Bishkek once told me it was very amazing to come to JBNU and attend the class of the professor who wrote the textbook they had learned from." He added, "I hope many more foreigners will learn Korean with 'Sejong Institute: Korean for Study in Korea' and pursue their academic dreams at JBNU."

Professor Kim published the regular King Sejong Institute textbook 'Sejong Korean' in 2022, and has steadily built expertise in Korean language education for international students, including serving as an item writer for the Sejong Korean Assessment (SKA).

Meanwhile, the Department of Korean Language at JBNU Namwon Glocal Campus is a department exclusively for international students. It cultivates global talents who will work in their professional fields based on a deep understanding of the Korean language and Korean culture. Currently, 70 international students are enrolled.
