JBNU is accepting submissions until August 31 for the country's largest university-based literary awards, the Garam Lee Byeong-gi Youth Poetry Award and the Choi Myung-hee Youth Short Story Award (hereinafter the Awards).

The Awards, organized by the JBNU University Press & Broadcasting Service, accept entries in poetry and short fiction for both university students and high school students. Poetry submissions must include at least three poems (including sijo). Short-story submissions must consist of at least one story.

Entries may be submitted in person at the editorial office of the JBNU University Press or by mail. Winners will share a total prize of KRW 11,000,000, and winning works will be published in the JBNU University Press's special issue commemorating the university's founding, to be issued in October.

JBNU has operated the Awards since 2001 to commemorate 'Garam' Lee Byeong-gi, known as the 'Orchid Poet,' and Choi Myung-hee, author of Honbul, in recognition of their landmark contributions to the history of Korean literature and to continue their literary legacy.

The Awards originated from the 'JBNU University Press Student Works Competition,' which has been held since 1955. Choi Myung-hee won the prize in 1971 with her short story Jeongok-i.

Meanwhile, the Awards have become an established gateway for emerging literary figures in Korea, discovering notable new writers. Novelists Kwon Sang-hyuk, Kim Bo-hyun, Kim Hak-chan, Son Hong-gyu, Lee Gap-su, Jeon A-ri, and Heo Tae-yeon, and poets Park Seong-jun, Baek Sang-woong, Lee Hye-mi, and Jo Yul are among the Awards' alumni. High school awardees also achieve strong results in various youth competitions and literary contests.
