Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) College of Engineering's Dr. Yuseon Jeon (Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Electrical Convergence Engineering, Advisor Seung‑ro Lee) received the 'Outstanding Thesis Award' at the 2026 Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers Spring Conference, Energy and Power Engineering Division.

'The Outstanding Thesis Award' is an award that the Korean Society of Mechanical Engineers grants based on the originality of the research topic, contribution to academic and technological advancement, and the quality of the thesis, to researchers in Korea who have obtained a master's·or doctoral degrees and selects and awards those who have achieved outstanding research outcomes. Dr. Jeon received a Doctor of Engineering degree from JBNU in February 2026.

Dr. Jeon's awarded dissertation, titled 'Study on the Combustion and Exhaust Characteristics of Inverse Non‑Premixed Flames Under Swirl Flow and Hydrogen Addition,' investigated the combustion mechanisms necessary for the stable use of eco‑friendly fuels that include hydrogen. The study experimentally analyzed the correlations among flame stability, mixing characteristics, and pollutant emissions when swirl flow and hydrogen were applied, and on that basis proposed design directions for clean combustion technologies.

In particular, the work was highly evaluated for its systematic clarification of the effects of swirl flow and hydrogen addition on combustion stability and pollutant reduction characteristics, achieved by quantitatively analyzing flame structure and the flow field using non‑contact optical diagnostic techniques.

This research is expected to provide fundamental data for improving the stability of industrial combustion systems applying hydrogen and other zero‑carbon fuels, and for developing low‑emission combustion technologies.

Currently, Dr. Jeon is employed as an early‑career researcher (postdoctoral researcher) in JBNU's BK21 Project Division
Special‑Purpose Future Vehicle ELITE Talent Development Project Group and is conducting research on future eco‑friendly energy utilization technologies.

Dr. Jeon said, "I will continue to pursue research on high‑efficiency, low‑emission combustion technologies based on eco‑friendly fuels and become a researcher who contributes to the advancement of carbon‑neutral energy technologies."
