JBNU and students from other national flagship universities visited Ulleungdo and Dokdo to reflect on the importance of the nation’s territory and reaffirm their commitment to patriotism.
JBNU announced that 140 students from four national flagship universities — JBNU, Kyungpook National University, Chonnam National University, and Chungnam National University — participated in a territorial exploration program in the Ulleungdo and Dokdo area from June 24 to 27.
This program is held annually to instill a correct understanding of Dokdo and to foster a sense of national identity among university students, while building organic communication and a mutually beneficial cooperation network among universities.
The expedition group held a launch ceremony and group-exchange sessions in Pohang on the first day, and on the following day, the 25th, they successfully landed on Dokdo. At Dokdo, the students performed a prearranged 'Dokdo flash mob' to widely publicize Dokdo’s significance as the inherent territory of the Republic of Korea.
On the 26th, they conducted ecological exploration around Ulleungdo and visited the Ahn Yong-bok Memorial Hall and the Dokdo Volunteer Defense Corps Memorial Hall in sequence, reflecting on their historical significance and strengthening ties among the universities.
President Yang O-bong said, 'It is very meaningful that students from the national flagship universities communicated in unity and shared the value of patriotism through this expedition,' adding, 'It is also highly significant that they were able to land on Dokdo thanks to favorable weather conditions.' He added, 'I hope this will serve as an opportunity for students to cultivate a proper historical consciousness on Dokdo and to grow into mature glocal talents who cooperate and show solidarity with others.'
Meanwhile, participating students plan to produce digital video content documenting the process of landing on Dokdo and the flash mob event, and to publicize Dokdo’s beauty and the legitimacy of its territorial sovereignty domestically and internationally through their personal and the universities' official social media channels.
