- Sharing the Energy Policy Direction of the Lee Jae-myung Administration and the Future Vision for Nuclear Power -

The Department of Quantum System Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) hosted a distinguished lecture on June 12 at Minju Auditorium, inviting National Assembly Member Hwang Jeong-ah of the National Assembly's Science, ICT, Broadcasting and Communications Committee.

The lecture was held under the theme "The Direction and Future of Energy Policy under the Lee Jae-myung Administration — With a Focus on Nuclear Power," and students and staff attended, showing strong interest in the future of energy policy and the development direction of the nuclear industry. The lecture was organized to enhance understanding of the future energy industry and science and technology development and to provide new students admitted to the Engineering Departments with opportunities to explore career paths.

In her lecture, Member Hwang explained the increase in electricity demand resulting from the global energy transition and the spread of the AI industry, and she outlined the direction of national energy policy while emphasizing the importance of energy security. She particularly stressed that nuclear power must play an important role alongside renewable energy to achieve carbon neutrality and ensure a stable power supply.

She also introduced the development prospects of future nuclear technologies, including the next-generation small modular reactor (SMR), and explained that nuclear power is a key means to simultaneously achieve carbon neutrality and energy security. Member Hwang has been working to foster the future nuclear industry, including recently promoting the enactment of special legislation to support SMR technology development and demonstration.

The students who attended increased their understanding of national energy policy and the future outlook of the nuclear industry, while gaining firsthand experience of how science and technology are linked with public policy, broadening their perspectives on career planning.

The Department of Quantum System Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) stated, "It was a meaningful occasion to understand the role of nuclear power and the direction of national policy amid a rapidly changing energy environment," and added, "We plan to continue operating various guest lecture programs so that students can grow into key talents who will lead the future energy industry."

Meanwhile, the Department of Quantum System Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) continues to expand its education and research with the goal of training nuclear engineering-based professionals through the implementation of "Strengthening Pre-Practical Education for Nuclear Safety" and the "Next-Generation Nuclear Specialist Training Project".
