    Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Capstone Design Competition: AI-Based Industrial Innovation Ideas Draw Attention

    JBNU RISE Project Group successfully concluded the '2026 Academic Year Spring Semester Capstone Design Competition', affirming its achievements in training practice-oriented talent for regional strategic industries.

     

    The competition was held on the 17th at the Jinsudang Lobby and Glocal Hall. It was hosted by the JBNU RISE Project Group and jointly organized by the Center for Engineering Education Innovation and the Intellectual Property Professional Training Project Group.

     

    A total of 96 teams and 493 students participated, publicly exhibiting the design and development outputs produced over one semester. Fifteen experts from industry, academia, and research institutes took part in the evaluation, which focused on competencies required in actual industrial settings such as technical merit, creativity, and commercial viability. The entire exhibition and assessment process was operated in an on-site, practice-centered manner, providing a comprehensive opportunity to verify students' problem-solving abilities and their linkage to strategic industries.

     

    As a result of the evaluation, 16 teams were selected as outstanding works. The grand prize went to a team that presented an AI motion-study technology based on MediaPipe, receiving high praise. The technology analyzes time-series coordinate data of a worker's hands and arms to automatically recognize basic motions (Therblig) and diagnose process inefficiencies in real time, enabling automation of work standards and analysis of production efficiency.

     

    The judging panel evaluated the piece as "one that presents the potential for innovation in the way work is analyzed in industrial settings."

     

    In Track 1, which focused on regional strategic industries such as Digital ICT, future mobility, advanced material convergence, and clean energy, a total of 12 teams received gold, silver, and bronze awards. In Track 2 (Intellectual Property), three teams were selected based on evaluations of patentability and creativity grounded in prior-art searches, indicating a significant improvement in students' capabilities to secure technology rights.

     

    The JBNU RISE Project Group plans to expand follow-up support centered on the outstanding technologies identified in the competition, including patent filing, technology transfer, and prototype refinement. It will also produce a compilation of all submissions and share it with internal and external institutions and regional industries to disseminate student achievements and strengthen industry–university–research collaboration.

     

    Oh Jong-hyun, Deputy Director of the JBNU RISE Project Group, stated, "This competition confirmed the outcomes of problem-solving capstone design education based on the demands of regional strategic industries. We will further strengthen systematic support in cooperation with co-organizing institutions so that outstanding student ideas can be connected to patents and commercialization."

     

    Meanwhile, JBNU plans to expand capstone design education with a stronger focus on links to regional industry partners and to advance collaboration networks with industry, academia, research institutes, and public organizations to continuously enhance students' practical experience and competitiveness in employment and entrepreneurship.
