Professor Chanho Kim (Department of Mathematics, College of Natural Science, Jeonbuk National University (JBNU)) received the 2026 Young Mathematician Prize awarded by the Korean Mathematical Society.

The Korean Mathematical Society Young Mathematician Prize is awarded to researchers whose first appointment as full-time faculty was within the past ten years, in recognition of outstanding papers published during the last five years.

Professor Chanho Kim was selected as the awardee in recognition of his research that elucidated the structure of Selmer groups of elliptic curves through the paper "The Structure of Selmer Groups and the Iwasawa Main Conjecture for Elliptic Curves" (American Journal of Mathematics, 2026).

This research is regarded as providing an important theoretical foundation for understanding the Birch and Swinnerton-Dyer (BSD) conjecture, a central open problem in number theory. In particular, it was recognized for its academic significance in extending previous work to present a structure theorem valid for elliptic curves of arbitrary rank.

Professor Chanho Kim graduated from the Department of Mathematics at Seoul National University and earned his M.S. and Ph.D. from Boston University in the United States. After serving as a researcher at the Korea Institute for Advanced Study and as a CMC Fellow at the Heo Jun-yi Mathematical Problems Research Institute, he has been on the faculty of the Department of Mathematics at JBNU since September 2024.

The award ceremony is scheduled to take place on June 24, 2026, during the "2026 Korean Mathematical Society 80th Anniversary International Conference" at the Korea Science and Technology Center in Seoul.
