Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is announcing a call for submissions for Korea's largest university literary awards, the 'Garam Lee Byung-gi Youth Poetry Literary Award' and the 'Choi Myung-hee Youth Short Story Literary Award' (hereinafter, the Awards).

The submission period runs from August 10 to August 31. The competition categories are poetry and short fiction for university students and high school students. For poetry, entrants must submit at least three poems, including sijo. For short fiction, at least one story must be submitted. Submissions may be made by visiting the editorial office of the JBNU University Newspaper or by mail.

Prizes will be awarded to the winners, and the winning works will be published in the JBNU University Newspaper's commemorative special issue published in October.

JBNU has operated the Awards since 2001 to honor the 'Orchid poet' Garam Lee Byung-gi and Choi Myung-hee, author of 'Honbul,' who made monumental contributions to Korean literary history, and to continue their literary legacy.

The Awards originated from the 'JBNU University Newspaper Student Works Contest,' which had been held since 1955. Author Choi Myung-hee was also a past winner, receiving the honor in 1971 with the novel 'Jeongok-i.'

Meanwhile, the Awards have discovered many prominent new writers in the Korean literary scene and have become a recognized gateway for literary talent. Novelists Kwon Sang-hyeok, Kim Bo-hyun, Kim Hak-chan, Son Hong-gyu, Lee Gap-su, Jeon A-ri, and Heo Tae-yeon, and poets Park Seong-jun, Baek Sang-woong, Lee Hye-mi, and Jo Yul are among those who emerged from these Awards.

High school winners have also achieved strong results in various youth-focused contests and competitions, such as the Kim Seung-ok Literary Award, the Kim Yu-jeong Writing Contest, the Daesan College Literary Award, the Manhae Festival National High School Writing Contest, the Munhakdongne Youth Literary Award, the Park Jae-sam Youth Literary Award, the Suju Youth Literary Award, the Yun Dong-ju Writing Contest, the Korea Youth Screenplay Contest, and the Korea Youth Literary Award.
