As the strategic importance of the Southeast Asian region grows, the 'Southeast Asia Language Camp,' which offers undergraduate and graduate students from Korean universities opportunities to study specialized foreign languages and gain regional understanding, will be held for the 13th time this year.

This camp, which has established itself as a representative program for learning Southeast Asian languages, began in 2019 as a Yeongnam–Honam exchange program between the Jeonbuk National University Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (Director Jeon Je-seong) and the Specialized Foreign Language Project Group at Busan University of Foreign Studies (Director Lee Mi-ji). It later expanded into a nationwide university consortium program and has become a leading specialized foreign language education program, with approximately 780 students from over 60 domestic and international universities participating to date.

This year’s camp will be held at Busan University of Foreign Studies for about two weeks from June 29 to July 10. Six courses will be offered: four Southeast Asian languages—Malay-Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, and Filipino—along with Arabic and Italian.

In particular, the camp is organized in an intensive residential format to enable focused short-term study. In addition to language classes, invited lectures by Southeast Asia experts are scheduled, allowing participants to enhance not only their language skills but also their understanding of the region's history, culture, and society.

This program is significant in that it shares educational resources through inter-university cooperation within a domestic higher education environment where opportunities to study specialized foreign languages are limited. The "Korean University Consortium for the Southeast Asia Language Camp (UNSEASK)," formed to operate the camp, includes 45 faculty members from 32 universities nationwide, including JBNU, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, Korea University, Pusan National University, and KAIST.

Each university jointly supports student recruitment and program administration, and the consortium network is driving efforts to promote specialized foreign language education.

Participants are provided with free accommodation, meals, and course materials, allowing them to attend without financial burden. Participant satisfaction is high: the average score was 4.67 out of 5, indicating strong educational effectiveness and satisfaction.

Applications for the Southeast Asia Language Camp will be accepted from May 18 to May 29, and details can be found on the JBNU website notices(/)을).

Jeon Je-seong, director of the Jeonbuk National University Institute for Southeast Asian Studies, said, "The Southeast Asia Language Camp is a program that cultivates global competencies based on regional understanding, beyond simple language instruction," and added, "We will expand the base of specialized foreign language education through inter-university cooperation."

As the global order is reshaped and the importance of Southeast Asia grows, the Southeast Asia Language Camp is expected to further strengthen its role as a practical educational platform for nurturing future talent.
