The Jeonbuk Provincial Environmental Health Center (Director Kim Yong-hyeon) convened the 'Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Joint Seminar on Health Responses to the Climate Crisis' at Jinsudang, Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), at 2:00 PM on the 24th. The event was held together with the Climate Change Response Environmental Health Center and the Jeonbuk Carbon Neutrality Support Center to discuss cooperation on identifying Jeonbuk-specific climate and health response policies.
This seminar was organized in response to the growing need to establish effective environmental health policies that reflect Jeonbuk's climate, environmental, and health characteristics, as the health impacts of the climate crisis manifest differently by region and social group.
In particular, the seminar focused on strengthening collaboration among relevant agencies and exploring ways to align policies to proactively respond to health risks associated with climate change, such as heatwaves, cold spells, air pollution, and environmentally induced diseases.
The event was jointly hosted by the Jeonbuk Provincial Environmental Health Center, the Climate Change Response Environmental Health Center, and the Jeonbuk Carbon Neutrality Support Center. The Jeonbuk Provincial Health and Environment Research Institute participated as an invited organization. About 20 officials from related organizations and experts attended to discuss region-tailored response strategies.
In the keynote presentations, Lee Hwan-hee, Director of the Climate Change Response Environmental Health Center, presented on "Directions for Establishing a Community-Based Climate and Health Response Model." Jang Nam-jeong, Director of the Jeonbuk Carbon Neutrality Support Center, explained "Climate Change Health Indicators and Response Status in the Jeonbuk Region." This was followed by a presentation from Park Seo-hyeon, Director of the Secretariat at the Jeonbuk Provincial Environmental Health Center, on "Cooperative Systems and Implementation Plans for Climate Change Health Responses in the Jeonbuk Region."
During the general discussion, participants concentrated on generating policy ideas that reflect local conditions, defining the roles of each institution to minimize health damage to residents, and identifying joint projects for future implementation. Practical policy directions were proposed, including protecting climate-vulnerable groups, strengthening health impact surveillance systems, and formulating policies based on regional health indicators.
Director Kim Yong-hyeon stated, "Responding to the climate crisis is a necessary task that goes beyond environmental issues and is essential for the health and safety of residents. I hope this joint seminar will serve as a starting point for developing a Jeonbuk-specific climate and health response model and further strengthen the community's collaborative framework."
Meanwhile, the Jeonbuk Provincial Environmental Health Center plans to continue developing environmental health policies and implementing collaborative projects to respond to the climate crisis based on regional characteristics, thereby contributing to the improvement of residents' health and the creation of a safe living environment.
