JBNU announced that it held an 'Advanced Defense Technology Exchange Seminar' on campus on April 27, attended by faculty from the Department of Advanced Defense Technology and Industry and executives from Hanwha Systems.

The seminar was organized to respond to the rapidly changing global security environment and the defense industry's shift toward advanced technology. It aimed to establish a practical foundation for industry–university technological cooperation and to explore directions for collaborative research and talent development.

About 30 key stakeholders attended the event, including faculty from the Department of Advanced Defense Technology and Industry at JBNU, Jang Won-jun, Deputy Director of the JBNU Defense Industry Research Institute, and Hong Yoon-seok, Director of the Hanwha Systems Maritime Research Institute.

Participants engaged in in-depth discussions on technological trends and potential areas of cooperation in core future defense fields, including AI-based defense systems; unmanned and autonomous systems; maritime manned–unmanned teaming (MUM-T) systems; defense data and network-centric warfare; and advanced sensors, electronics, and communication technologies.

In particular, Hanwha Systems presented its research and development directions for maritime unmanned systems and defense electronics. JBNU shared an education and research model that integrates advanced technologies and defense policy, and proposed measures to expand industry–university collaborative research and cooperation in talent development.

Jang Won-jun, Deputy Director of the JBNU Defense Industry Research Institute, said, 'Modern warfare is being restructured around a 'combat ecosystem' that combines data, AI, and platforms. This seminar will serve as the foundation for building an industry–university cooperation ecosystem in which university theory and corporate technology are organically linked, creating a virtuous cycle of joint research, technology demonstration, and talent development.'

Hong Yoon-seok, Director of the Hanwha Systems Maritime Research Institute, said, 'Maritime unmanned systems and manned–unmanned teaming are core areas of future naval power. We expect that exchanges with JBNU will strengthen maritime defense capabilities based on advanced technologies through industry–university cooperation.'

This year, JBNU established the country's first undergraduate Department of Advanced Defense Technology and Industry, and is expanding collaboration with global defense companies and research institutions to become a key hub for cultivating K-defense talent.

Lee Byung-kwon, Senior Research Fellow at the JBNU Defense Industry Research Institute and former Naval Logistics Commander, who led the seminar, said, 'This seminar is significant not only as an exchange, but as a starting point for joint technology development and talent cultivation among industry, universities, and research institutes. Going forward, we will progressively expand cooperation by identifying joint research projects, industry–university projects and internships, and developing defense-specialized education programs linked to recruitment.'
