Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), which is entrusted to operate the Jeonbuk Special Self-Governing Province Environmental Health Center (Director Kim Yong-hyun), will install and operate a Living Lab-based "Odor Citizen Reporting and Environmental Quality Monitoring Project" in the Jeonju Innovation City area from April to October to assess how odors and environmental factors in the living environment affect residents' health.
Co-led with the Jeonbuk Institute of Health and Environment, this project is characterized by linking odor reports submitted directly by citizens. Citizens can easily report even minor odors noticed in daily life via QR codes attached to posters and placards.
Odors are a complex environmental health issue that goes beyond mere inconvenience; what residents perceive may differ from actual exposure.
Accordingly, the Center will collect information voluntarily reported by residents—such as the time, location, and type of odor occurrences—and will gather IoT-based measurements that allow real-time monitoring of air conditions and air quality analysis results from 24-hour sample collection. The Center will cross-validate these data to develop practical exposure management measures that reflect residents' experiences.
Director Kim Yong-hyun said, "Through this Living Lab-type odor citizen reporting and environmental quality monitoring project, meaning a 'laboratory in everyday life,' residents will participate directly in the research process, which will enhance understanding of environmental health and contribute to strengthening community environmental health capacity." He added, "The two institutions will continue to carry out resident-participatory environmental health Living Labs and studies linking environmental quality and health, and will strengthen communication with residents."
