Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) RISE Project Group held the "Research Cluster Establishment Project First-Year Performance Sharing Meeting" at the Namwon Sweet Hotel on the 27th and unveiled key research outcomes to support the industrial restructuring of Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province.
This performance-sharing meeting reviewed the first-year results of concentrating the university's research capabilities on Jeollabuk-do's two strategic industries, "life industries" and "transition industries." Over the past year, the Project Group exceeded its initial targets by achieving quantitative indicators including publication of 17 papers in SCI(E)-level international journals, about 40 presentations at domestic and international academic conferences, and five patent and design applications, thereby demonstrating the technological drive for regional industrial transformation.
In particular, achievements in the life-industries sector, a future growth area for Jeollabuk-do, were notable. In areas such as advanced diagnostics and drug delivery systems and research on biomaterials for pharmaceuticals alone, 13 SCI papers and more than 30 conference presentations were produced, securing world-class technological competitiveness necessary for innovation in Jeollabuk's bio industry. In addition, the establishment of an R&D hub for next-generation food tech and completion of manufacturing standardization for domestic production of veterinary pharmaceuticals expanded the scope of the life industries.
Differentiated outcomes were also achieved in the transition-industries sector, a future new growth engine. In hydrogen energy and carbon-neutral technologies, the Project Group secured large-area scaling techniques for next-generation energy production devices and efficiency metrics, laying the groundwork for commercialization.
From a defense-industry perspective, advancements in intelligent detection and response algorithms laid the foundation for building a Jeollabuk-style advanced defense system. The meeting also shared achievements accelerating the shift of traditional industries toward higher added value, including smart mobility platforms and reliability evaluation for next-generation semiconductors.
Son Jeong-min, head of the JBNU RISE Project Group, said, "The 17 SCI-level papers and various patent achievements derived this time are core technological assets supplied by the university to support Jeollabuk-do's industrial restructuring toward life industries and transition industries. Building on the encouraging quantitative results of the first year, in the second year we will intensify technology transfer and commercialization to regional companies and complete a virtuous cycle in which local industry, academia, and research mutually benefit."
Meanwhile, the JBNU RISE Project Group plans to compile the results confirmed at the performance-sharing meeting into a database for management and to continuously expand tailored technical support and industry–university collaboration touchpoints linked to the industrial policies of Jeollabuk-do Special Self-Governing Province.
