Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has unveiled a new global lounge in the heart of campus where enrolled students, international students, and local residents can come together and communicate.
On March 11 at 4:30 p.m., JBNU established a 706 square-meter 'Sky Lounge' on the rooftop of the fourth floor of the JBNU International Center, the university's hub for internationalization, and held an opening ceremony. The ceremony was attended by President Yang O-bong, senior university officials, student representatives, and representatives of international students from various countries, who toured the new facility together and celebrated the opening.
The opening of the Sky Lounge is one of JBNU's key achievements in its ongoing efforts to pursue a student-centered approach, regional coexistence, and the realization of a global hub university.
To enhance students' learning environments and quality of rest, JBNU transformed the first floor of the Central Library into an innovative multi-purpose cultural space called the 'Jungdo Lounge.' Last year, it also opened the 'International Lounge' on the first floor of the JBNU International Center, which received strong support.
The newly opened Sky Lounge also features a customized design that prioritizes student convenience, strengthening JBNU's distinctive student-centered welfare infrastructure. Located at the heart of campus, the Sky Lounge boasts an open view overlooking the University Headquarters and the main gate, and is expected to become a new campus landmark.
In particular, this space is expected to serve as a core infrastructure supporting JBNU's Glocal University 30 project's key goal of attracting 5,000 international students. For domestic students, it will serve as a place for daily interaction to cultivate global competencies. For international students, it is expected to function as a communication hub where they can naturally learn Korean and improve the convenience of their study-abroad life. Furthermore, as an open space for local residents, it will help dissolve the boundaries between the university and the local community.
At the opening ceremony, President Yang O-bong said, "We will spare no support to ensure that students can devote themselves to their studies in the comfortable and beautiful Sky Lounge and nurture their dreams higher and larger toward the world," and added, "In particular, I hope that international students can use this place to learn Korean and Korean culture, laying the foundation for a successful study-abroad experience."
