Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) will further expand and operate the '1,000-Won Breakfast' to reduce students' financial burdens and promote healthy eating habits.
In an era of high prices, the '1,000-Won Breakfast,' which has provided students with low-cost morning meals, will run for a total of 130 days from March 4 to December 18. Except during vacation periods and public holidays, it will operate daily from 8:00 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at the Student Cooperative's Welfare Hall on campus.
On the morning of the 5th, JBNU, Jeollabuk‑do, Jeonju City, and the Jeonbuk National University Alumni Association, which support the '1,000-Won Breakfast,' held an opening ceremony. At 8:30 a.m. in the Welfare Hall's student cafeteria, about 30 people, including President Yang O‑bong; Kim Gwan‑young, Governor of Jeollabuk Special Self‑Governing Province; Woo Beom‑gi, Mayor of Jeonju; Choi Byung‑seon, President of the Alumni Association; Yoon Myung‑suk, Executive Vice‑President of Foreign Affairs and Professional Affairs; Jo Dong‑hyu, Vice‑President of the Office of Student Career Support; Yoo Chang‑ho, Deputy Vice‑President of the Office of Student Support; and representatives of student self‑governance such as the JBNU Student Council, shared breakfast and spent time communicating.
JBNU has extended the operating period from 120 days last year to 130 days this year to expand the highly popular program. The number of meals served has also been increased from 30,000 last year to 32,500 this year. The university plans to further strengthen support so that students can have breakfast without financial burden.
Project funding comes from the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, which provides 2,000 won, while Jeollabuk‑do and Jeonju City each contribute 1,000 won. JBNU and the Jeonbuk National University Alumni Association also add 2,000 won to operate the program.
President Yang O‑bong stated, "The '1,000‑Won Breakfast' has established itself as JBNU's signature welfare program, reducing students' financial burdens while helping to form healthy eating habits. Going forward, we will continue to expand the number of meals served so that more students can start their day with a nutritious breakfast."
