Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is shifting the educational paradigm toward learner-centered instruction to cultivate creative, interdisciplinary talent for the AI era. It plans to expand learner-centered classes—where students actively lead participation—beyond the traditional one-way transmission of knowledge, and has prepared a teaching methods workshop to put this into full practice.

JBNU will hold the "2025 Academic Year Learner-Centered Participatory Course Design Teaching Methods Workshop" for faculty on January 19 in the Student Town area. The workshop is intended to develop operational strategies for applying innovative teaching methods—such as PBL (problem-based learning), action learning, and capstone design—in actual courses.

The workshop features an intensive curriculum combining theory and practice. Part 1 will begin with a presentation of an innovation model case from the IC-PBL Center of Hanyang University, followed by a lecture by Professor Jang Gyeong-won of Gyeonggi University on understanding PBL and case examples by type.

In the Part 2 practical session, faculty will design problem-solving course processes themselves. Under the guidance of Professor Jang Gyeong-won’s team, they will prepare assignment specification documents, and Professor Go Su-il from JBNU’s Department of Business Administration will participate to provide strategies for designing discussion matrices and employing protocols for problem solving.

In particular, the workshop gains added significance as it will be held in JBNU’s newly established "PBL Advanced Classroom" in the Student Town. The campus’s first dedicated PBL classroom is a future-oriented educational space optimized for discussion, collaboration, and problem solving beyond simple lecture delivery.

There are two newly established PBL classrooms. The large surround-type classroom, 220 m² in size and capable of accommodating 116 people, is designed with the instructor station placed centrally to allow all-around communication with students. A standard PBL classroom with an 80-person capacity has also been prepared to enable tailored operation according to class size.

Both classrooms are fully equipped with ICT-based educational facilities, including group and large electronic whiteboards, glass boards, and movable desks. This will enable real-time sharing of instructor annotations and immediate visualization of team discussion outcomes, which is expected to dramatically enhance learning engagement and interaction.

Yang O-bong, President of JBNU, said, "This workshop will be a valuable opportunity for JBNU, which advocates being a student-centered university, to shift to learner-centered, future-oriented education and to establish an education model specialized to JBNU," adding, "We will make active use of the newly established advanced classrooms to create a dynamic educational environment in which faculty and students grow together."
