Professor Emeritus Kim Hyun-sook, who served for 27 years in the Department of Urban Engineering at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) and dedicated herself to scholarly research and to the advancement of spatial and urban policy at the regional and national levels, donated KRW 10 million to commemorate her retirement and to support the training of future scholars and the development of the department.
This donation is an example of putting into practice, at retirement, the deep affection she has long held for the department and its students. The funds will be used to improve the Department of Urban Engineering's educational and research environment and to support students.
Professor Emeritus Kim Hyun-sook conveyed her warm wishes to her juniors, saying, "I hope this will be a small help for students to continue enjoying department activities and to take on challenges in the wider world."
The Department of Urban Engineering said, "We deeply thank Professor Emeritus Kim Hyun-sook for practicing a meaningful act of sharing for the growth of the department and the future of students," adding, "We will do our best to ensure the professor's academic achievements and public values are translated into educational and research outcomes."
The donation is expected to serve both as a great example to department members and as an occasion to reaffirm the Department of Urban Engineering's public-mindedness and social responsibility.
During her tenure as a professor in the Department of Urban Engineering at JBNU, Professor Emeritus Kim Hyun-sook devoted herself to education and research as well as to the overall development of the department. In recognition of these contributions, she was appointed Professor Emeritus upon retirement.
During her service, she served on numerous national committees, including the Presidential National Architecture Policy Committee, the Regional Development Committee, and the National Land Policy Committee, advising on the formulation of architecture, national land, and balanced development policies.
In particular, while serving as the third Commissioner of the Saemangeum Development Agency, she led integrated and linkage strategies of the Saemangeum master plan — including renewable energy, waterfront cities, and the creation of advanced industrial complexes — and helped set the direction for national spatial development.
