The original musical 'Daebul Hotel (The Great BUDDA HOTEL)', set at Incheon's Daebul Hotel—the first modern Western-style hotel in Korea—will be presented to audiences for the first time in a reading showcase concert.
Hosted by the Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) The Art and Culture research Institute and held as part of a recital by composer and JBNU Department of Music professor Shin Hyuk-jin, the performance will take place on January 17 (Sat) at 7:00 PM at the Ujin Cultural Space Art Theater. Admission to the performance is by invitation only.
'Daebul Hotel' is a work that uses the history of the opening of Korea to foreign trade and Incheon Port as its backdrop. It unravels the memory of the short-lived Daebul Hotel through elements of mystery and fantasy. The new piece presents itself not as a simple historical drama but as an original 'mystery fantasy musical.' Through two lead characters, it dreamily interweaves fragmentary lives and memories across many eras.
The creative team brings together composer Shin Hyuk-jin, scriptwriter Kim Jae-chung, and director Yoo Seong-mok. Music director Heo Jun-hwi joins actors Kim Ah-reum and Jo Ye-chan in the principal roles. The stage begins with the remains of the Daebul Hotel, discovered after a century, and narratively unfolds the lives of figures buried in a time of upheaval and the traces they left on Incheon Port.
JBNU Professor Shin Hyuk-jin (Department of Music) said, 'This work is a concept musical that contemplates an era while conveying individual narratives within history. It focuses on exploring new possibilities for Korean original musical theater. Our goal is to develop this reading showcase into a full repertory production.'
Meanwhile, the performance is organized by Hyundai Cultural Planning and Moa Planning. For inquiries, call 02-2266-1307 or 063-270-3736.
