Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Divsion of Public Science student Kim Yoon-su received the Gwangju Metropolitan City Mayor's Commendation for his contributions to preserving the historical truth of the May 18 Democratic Uprising and combating distortion.

This commendation was awarded to outstanding participants among the May 18 Memorial Foundation’s distortion-response supporters 'May Mate (MAYT)' who devoted themselves to monitoring false information and hateful expressions disseminated online and offline and correcting them.

'May Mate (MAYT)', which involved about 150 participants nationwide, carried out various activities over the past year, including ▲reporting and filing distortion cases ▲visiting May 18 historical sites ▲workshops on ideas for responding to May 18 distortion ▲a May Mate recommended-reading project.

Kim Yoon-su, the award recipient, not only recorded the highest number of distortion reports but also took a leading role in solidarity and promotional activities among the supporters.

Kim Yoon-su, who was recently admitted to the Law School, commented, 'Through my May Mate activities I was able to reflect more deeply on the path I want to take,' adding, 'I will become a legal professional who uncovers the truth and defends human rights.'

A representative of the May 18 Memorial Foundation said, 'May Mate activities, carried out through citizens' voluntary participation, have become a strong shield against distortion of the May 18 history,' and added, 'We will continue efforts to preserve the memory of May 18 and to fully convey its value to future generations through various citizen participation programs.'
