Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) PhD candidate Seo Su-ji (Department of Mechanical, Aerospace and Electrical Convergence Engineering; supervisor Professor Lee Jae-seok) presented the paper titled “Development of a Pulse Width Modulation Technique to Reduce Switching Voltage Spikes in Inverters” at the 56th Summer Conference recently held by the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers and received the Korea Power Exchange Chairman's Award.

The award-winning paper proposed a pulse width modulation (PWM) technique that can effectively reduce voltage spikes occurring during inverter switching. The study provided theoretical analysis and demonstrated the potential for application in actual power conversion systems, earning high marks for its academic rigor and industrial applicability.

In particular, the technique is expected to help reduce switching voltages in power electronic systems, thereby improving the reliability and lifespan of power conversion devices.

PhD candidate Seo said, “I am pleased that the research, conducted to mitigate switching voltage spikes in power electronic systems and thereby address electromagnetic interference issues in power electronic devices and motor drive problems, resulted in such a meaningful award. I hope to continue research that enhances the stability and reliability of power systems.” She added, “I am grateful to Professor Lee Jae-seok for his generous guidance and advice throughout the research.”

Meanwhile, the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers' Summer Conference is a major academic event in Korea attended by researchers in the fields of electricity, power, and power electronics. The conference presents awards for outstanding papers under the names of heads of public institutions.
