Professor Emerita Hye‑Kyung Kim (Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Department of Sociology), a leading scholar in Korean women's studies, donated 10 million won to be used for university development and the training of future scholars.
Professor Emerita Hye‑Kyung Kim served as a professor in the Department of Sociology at JBNU from 2004 to 2024. Over those twenty years, she was a leading Korean scholar in women's studies who conducted systematic research on Korea's family history, gender sociology, and family policy.
In particular, Professor Kim served as director of the Women's Research Institute at JBNU and as the 33rd president of the Korean Association for Women's Studies, leading the development of women's studies in Korea. She also served as a welfare committee member of the Korean Women's Associations United and as a director of the Jeonbuk Women's Rights Support Center, taking the lead in regional women's movements and grassroots practice and thus serving as a bridge between theory and practice.
Professor Emerita Kim said, "I hope my students will continue to pursue deeper research in the fields of women's studies and sociology to which I have devoted my life," and added, "I will continue to support the Department of Sociology at JBNU as it becomes a cradle for talent with the insight to understand the times."
The university stated that it will allocate the donated funds to designated scholarships for the Department of Sociology and other purposes, and will use them meaningfully to support students' academic pursuits in accordance with the donor's intentions.
