Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), centered on the Jeonbuk National University Humanities Research Institute (Director Cho Dae-yeon), has completed the construction of a digital humanities education, research, and publicity XR platform and is attracting attention. The XR space built this time features experiential content that recreates JBNU's major buildings and landmarks, as well as the histories and visions, curricula, career paths, and student activities of each department within the College of Humanities. Users can access the actual XR space and tour the virtual campus through the designated online address (www.joo.is/jbnu-campus).
This project was carried out through collaboration between the JBNU Humanities Research Institute, LifeSkills (CEO Lee Dong-ho), a company specializing in convergent media content development, and OneulBaum (CEO Joo Bang-hyun), an educational content company. Both companies provided technical consulting and production support across the entire process—including space design and visual composition based on Spot Virtual and interaction structure design using ThingLink—enhancing the XR platform's completeness.
Notably, the XR space was built based on content designed directly by students through the "Proud of Our Department XR Contest" organized by the Jeonbuk National University Humanities Research Institute. Students who participated in the contest creatively reimagined each department's characteristics and identity using Spot Virtual, and configured the XR environment so that clicking the Humanities and Social Sciences Building in the overall XR space would move users to each department's promotional area.
Participating students unanimously said that experience in producing XR content helped them understand their departments and explore career paths. One student said, "By implementing department information directly in the virtual space, my pride in the department grew," and another said, "Designing the XR space allowed me to develop skills in digital content production."
Cho Dae-yeon, Director of the Humanities Research Institute and a professor in the Department of Archaeology & Anthropology, said, "This XR construction is a new form of humanities experiment that combines students' creative contributions with technical cooperation from professional companies," adding, "It is significant in that it has created a differentiated digital humanities experiential space unique to JBNU."
The digital humanities XR platform is regarded as an extensible digital humanities infrastructure that integrates education, research, and promotion beyond simple department publicity. It is expected to serve as the foundation for various future activities, such as digital humanities educational materials, exhibitions of research achievements, and the construction of departmental archives. It is also anticipated to expand into an effective promotional platform that intuitively conveys the university's and departments' identities to new students, parents, and external visitors.
