JBNU invited Jeong Dae-cheol, Chairman of the Korea National Assembly Members' Association, to deliver a special lecture to university members.
JBNU announced that on December 31 Jeong Dae-cheol, Chairman of the Korea National Assembly Members' Association, visited the campus, toured major facilities and gave a special lecture on forgiveness.
On the day, Chairman Jeong visited the memorial space for martyr Lee Se-jong, the Jungdo Lounge and the International Convention Center in sequence to review the university's history and its educational and research environment.
Then, from 4:00 p.m., he held a workplace training lecture at the Han Seung-heon Library attended by some 50 JBNU faculty, staff and university members. The lecture, titled 'The Meaning and Value of Forgiveness,' explained the power and social significance of forgiveness from the perspective of individual and communal restoration.
In his lecture, Chairman Jeong said, 'Forgiveness is, before being a choice for others, a process of freeing oneself and restoring peace,' and emphasized that 'it transforms wounded victims into survivors and serves as the starting point for restoring trust in the community beyond individual maturity.'
He particularly explained, citing various studies and cases, that forgiveness can improve mental and physical health and lead to restored relationships, increased creativity and recovered self-control.
He also added that forgiveness is not simply an emotional matter but a matter of choice and attitude, and that through repetition and practice it can become a way of life.
Meanwhile, Jeong Dae-cheol graduated from Seoul National University College of Law and earned his master's and doctoral degrees in political science from the University of Missouri. He served five terms in the National Assembly (the 9th, 10th, 13th, 14th and 16th sessions) and currently serves as chairman of the Korea National Assembly Members' Association for its 22nd and 23rd terms.
