Graduate and undergraduate students from the Department of Smart Farm at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) have distinguished themselves by winning multiple awards at major domestic academic conferences and competitions during 2025.

Master's student Seok Seung-won, under the supervision of Professor Kim Tae-gon, presented research titled 'Development of a Nationwide Farmland Nutrient Runoff Simulation Framework Based on an APEX–Metamodel Coupling for Climate Change Response' and received the Outstanding Presentation Award at the academic conference of the Korean Society of Agricultural Engineers. He also received the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award from the Korean Society for Biological and Environmental Control for a study that analyzed changes in solar radiation and sunshine duration in Korea using 32 years (1993–2024) of Automated Surface Observing System (ASOS) data from the Korea Meteorological Administration.

In addition, the 'SDA Team'—graduate students Jeon Hye-jin, Jeong Jae-young, and Seok Seung-won, and undergraduates Kim Mi-so, Kim Ha-jong, and Jang Eun-su (supervisor Professor Kim Tae-gon)—received the Excellence Award at the 4th Agricultural Engineering Creative Idea Competition for their project 'Development of a City, County and District-Level Mapping Platform Using Agricultural Statistics and Predictive Models,' recognizing their creative problem-solving abilities.

Undergraduate research also stood out. Fourth-year undergraduate student Yoon Jeong-min (supervisor Professor Lee Jun-woo) received the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award for research titled 'Changes in Growth, Photosynthesis, and Nitrogen Allocation of Hydroponically Grown Kale at Various Nitrate Concentrations.'

Third-year undergraduate student Oh Ryu-gyeong (supervisor Professor Lee Jun-woo) also presented his research at the 121st Annual Meeting of the Korean Society for Horticultural Science, held recently in Gyeongju. His study, 'Coupling of Photosynthesis, Stomatal Conductance, and Energy Balance Models and Parameter Estimation for Estimating Lettuce Photosynthetic Responses,' won the Outstanding Poster Presentation Award.

Kim Tae-gon, Head of the Department of Smart Farm, said, 'These awards at various academic conferences and competitions demonstrate our department's excellent research capabilities and the students' creative problem-solving skills. We will continue to work to nurture talent that will lead future-oriented agriculture through convergent education in core digital and smart agriculture technologies and the biological and environmental fields.'
