Professor Kim Garam Publishes 'A Study of Chinese Korean Language Teachers'

Professor Kim Garam of the Department of Korean Language at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Namwon Glocal Campus has published 'A Study of Chinese Korean Language Teachers'. This book systematically analyzes the characteristics and overall teaching activities of Chinese Korean language teachers who teach Korean at Chinese universities.
 

The book comprehensively examines Chinese Korean language teachers' patterns of instructional language use and their decision-making processes, learners' perceptions of Chinese Korean language teachers, and the professional development of non-native teachers. To date, research on teacher education in the field of Korean language education has mainly focused on Korean native teachers; by focusing on non-native Chinese Korean language teachers as its subject, this study is recognized for expanding the horizons of Korean language education research.


As Korean language education abroad rapidly expands, the role and importance of non-native Korean language teachers are also growing. In response to this trend JBNU established the Department of Korean Language at its Namwon Glocal Campus with the goal of training foreign Korean language teachers. Professor Kim, as the department's first full-time faculty member, is leading efforts to train professional Korean language teachers for international students.
 

Professor Kim stated, 'I will do my utmost to educate international students who enroll in the Department of Korean Language so that they can grow into Korean language teachers with professional competence.' Accordingly, beginning with the 2026 academic year, 80 new international students will enter the Department of Korean Language and, starting with basic Korean communicative education, will complete a four-year systematic teacher training program that includes Korean language and Korean culture courses and a practicum to obtain Korean language teacher certification.
 

 

Meanwhile, 'A Study of Chinese Korean Language Teachers' is the 13th volume in the research series published by JBNU's College of Education Center for Subject Matter Education, and it is regarded as a research achievement that has contributed to structuring the academic knowledge system in the field of subject-matter education.
