Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) secured certification for six laboratories in the '2025 Certification Program for Excellent Laboratory Safety Management' organized by the Ministry of Science and ICT, reinforcing its position as a leading university for safety management in research.

The laboratories selected for certification this time are the Water Treatment Engineering Laboratory (Principal Investigator: Professor Kim Min-sik), the Quantum Beam Soft Materials Laboratory (Principal Investigator: Professor Kim Tae-hwan), the Pulp and Paper Engineering Laboratory (Principal Investigator: Professor Jeong Myeong-jun), the Large Wind Tunnel Experimental Center (Principal Investigator: Professor Kwon Sun-deok), the Compound Semiconductor Laboratory (Principal Investigator: Professor Lee Hong-seok), and the highest-rated laboratory, the Laboratory of Agricultural Environmental Toxicology (Principal Investigator: Professor Park Min-gu).

The Certification Program for Excellent Laboratory Safety Management is implemented to strengthen laboratory safety management systems and ensure the safety of research personnel. Laboratories are selected through a rigorous evaluation covering laboratory environment, equipment management, and safety education and training.

JBNU has made creating a safe research environment a key priority in university operations. Led by the Division of Health and Safety, the university has continuously worked to systematically assess and improve laboratories' safety management levels. This achievement reflects the university's safety-centered commitment.

In practice, JBNU has established safety management systems tailored to each laboratory's characteristics, conducts regular safety inspections and improvements, and operates professional safety education and training programs for research personnel to raise safety awareness.

The university has also introduced the latest safety equipment and personal protective equipment to enhance the safety of the research environment. It has established emergency response procedures and conducts drills. In particular, centered on a dedicated safety department, it maintains a management system that continuously monitors risk factors and enables rapid responses to prevent accidents.

To foster a voluntary safety culture within laboratories, JBNU regularly holds campaigns and forums and has streamlined and made laboratory operation manuals more intuitive so researchers can easily understand and comply with safety rules.

President Yang O-bong of JBNU held an awards ceremony for the certified laboratories to commend the researchers' efforts and said, 'I congratulate the achievement of the third-highest number of laboratory certifications among domestic universities in 2025, and continuous efforts are needed so that more laboratories can be selected next year.'
