The memorial service honoring the late donors Choi Eun-sun and Kim Jeong-suk, who donated their entire assets to scholarships for students before passing away, was held on the morning of November 28 at Daewonsa Temple on the foothills of Moaksan.
This memorial service is held annually to commemorate the donors Choi Eun-sun and Kim Jeong-suk and to honor their noble intentions in donating all of their assets to scholarships for students.
In 1997, donor Choi Eun-sun donated assets worth approximately 390 million won, which she had accumulated over her lifetime through basket vending and piecework sewing, to Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) scholarships. Donor Kim Jeong-suk contributed real estate worth approximately 100 million won for scholarships.
The memorial service was attended by representatives of the Jeonbuk National University Development Foundation, scholarship recipients, bereaved family members, members of the Buddhist Association, and members of Choi-samo (a group of people who loved donor Choi Eun-sun, who had been a university employee). Each year on the anniversary of their passing, they honor the donors' noble intentions through memorial rites and maintain this cherished connection.
Park Jin-ho, Vice Chair of the Jeonbuk National University Development Foundation, who attended on behalf of the Foundation's Chair, said, "Through the annual memorial service we honor the donors' intentions and share our gratitude. Our university will also uphold the donors' profound intentions and do its best to promote a culture of giving."
An Min-hyeok, a fourth-year student in the Department of Electrical Engineering who attended the memorial service for the second consecutive year, said, "I wanted to personally express my gratitude to donor Choi Eun-sun for the scholarship, so despite the cold weather I attended the memorial service. I will deeply engrave the donors' precious intentions in my heart, devote myself further to my studies, and someday, when I enter society, become a person who can repay the love I received by giving to others."
