The 'Han Seung-heon Library' opened on November 11 at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Law School to honor the late lawyer Han Seung-heon, a towering figure in South Korea's legal community and the pro-democracy movement, and to enable future generations and the local community to jointly inherit the spirit of democracy, justice, and human rights he left behind.

JBNU held the opening ceremony at 10:00 a.m. that day with about 100 attendees, including the deceased's family, President Yang O-bong, Governor Kim Gwan-young, representatives from the Sanmin Han Seung-heon Memorial Association, and officials from the Sanmin Forum. The Han Seung-heon Library was created as an open humanities space to learn the spirit of the age, engage in discussion, and foster joint growth between the region and the university.

At the commemorative lectures, former Supreme Court Justice Kim Seon-su gave a lecture titled 'Judicial Reform with Lawyer Han Seung-heon,' and Yu Si-chun, Chair of EBS, delivered a lecture titled 'Human Rights Activism with Lawyer Han Seung-heon.' The two speakers received warm applause as they revisited Han's principles and actions demonstrated through judicial reform and his work with Amnesty International, and the path of human-rights advocacy he left behind.

The opening ceremony continued with introductions of guests, a progress report, President Yang O-bong's commemorative address, congratulatory speeches, and a ribbon cutting. President Yang stated, 'The Han Seung-heon Library is a space that embodies values our society must not forget and will serve as a living educational venue that passes on the spirit of democracy, justice, and human rights to future generations,' and added, 'All members of JBNU will take this place as an opportunity to learn and put into practice the late's intentions.'

The library opening was initiated after the late Han Seung-heon's family donated KRW 100 million to JBNU as a development fund. Combined with budgets from programs such as the National University Development Project, it was established with a total of KRW 620 million.

The Han Seung-heon Library was planned as a space at his alma mater to enshrine the records and spirit left by the late lawyer and as a symbolic place to reflect on the values of democracy, human rights, and justice. With a total floor area of 378 m² (approximately 114 pyeong), it will operate as an open multipurpose space where 100–150 people can study, hold discussions, and relax together.

The bereaved family said, 'We hope the Han Seung-heon Library will develop into a space that cultivates righteous intellect and a warm conscience in future generations,' and added, 'We expect that the late's spirit will live on in the hearts of young people.'

Meanwhile, the late lawyer Han Seung-heon (1933–2022), born in Jinan, Jeonbuk, graduated from JBNU's Department of Political Science and devoted his life as a human-rights lawyer to defending the underprivileged and justice in numerous political cases such as the Tonghyukdang case, the Mincheonghakryeon case, and the Inhyukdang case. He served as Auditor General and as Chair of the Committee for the Promotion of Judicial Reform, earning the reputation as 'the lawyer of the common people and the disadvantaged.' Last year, the Sanmin Forum was launched to honor his legacy.
