Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences AI Remote Sensing Laboratory students Kim Suhwan, Han Dohi, and Lee Yejin (Advisor Professor Yeom Jongmin) recently won the Excellence Award in the Data Analysis and Production category at the '2025 Saemangeum Public Data Utilization Competition'.

Hosted by the Saemangeum Development Agency, the competition was held to create a business-friendly Saemangeum and explore future development through the public’s creative ideas and data analysis capabilities. A total of 12 awardees were selected. The event has established itself as a prestigious competition that evaluates creative approaches using public data and the potential for practical policy contributions.

JBNU students participated with the project titled "Spatio-Temporal Variation Analysis of Algae in Saemangeum Lake Using AI Based on Saemangeum Watershed Water Quality Data and Satellite Data." They developed an AI model that fuses GOCI satellite imagery and in-situ water quality monitoring network data to precisely predict chlorophyll-a concentrations and algal fluctuations.

Advisor Professor Yeom Jongmin said, "It is highly meaningful that the students independently devised ways to utilize public data, refined their creative ideas, and achieved outstanding results in a nationwide competition organized by a government agency."
