Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Virtual Goods Law Center (Director Song Mun-ho) and Inha University AI & Data Law Center (Director Kim Won-o) held a joint academic conference on 'Norms and Legal Systems in Virtual Spaces in the Age of Digital Transformation.'
The conference, held on the 24th at the JBNU Law School, was organized to clarify perspectives on newly emerging legal issues in the era of digital transformation and to explore directions for establishing new norms.
At the conference, the two institutions engaged in in-depth discussions on legislative trends for establishing a new order in the era of digital transformation and on the legal issues surrounding regulatory frameworks for virtual assets.
They exchanged views on topics including AI and the Agreement on Technical Barriers to Trade; research on reasonable cybersecurity standards (focusing on U.S. state law); the creation and protection of intellectual property in the metaverse; judicial rights and transfers of digital currencies (focusing on the situation in Japan); the current state and legal issues of tokenization of tangible assets; and the dual regulatory regime for virtual assets and issues of financial consumer protection.
That day, Directors Song Mun-ho and Kim Won-o said, 'This conference has provided an opportunity for the two institutions to deepen exchange and knowledge sharing,' and they added that they shared a vision to jointly establish an 'Asia Research Belt for Virtual Goods Law and AI Law' encompassing Taiwan, China, India, Japan, and Vietnam.
They added, 'The two research centers plan to strive to serve as a foundation for exploring reasonable legal and institutional measures so that South Korea can establish itself as a digital powerhouse.'
Meanwhile, the JBNU Virtual Goods Law Center is actively conducting research and activities domestically and internationally in areas related to virtual assets, data, and AI.
Inha University's AI & Data Law Center is pursuing similar activities, such as jointly holding the '2nd Korea–China Data Intelligence Legal Forum' with the East China University of Political Science and Law this January.
