Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), led by President Yang O-bong, received support from the Agence universitaire de la Francophonie (AUF), headquartered in Paris, and offered programs that enabled enrolled students to engage with French culture. The programs received a strong response.
In April, JBNU provided students seeking global employment with an opportunity to acquire various job-related information through visits to the Korea‑France Chamber of Commerce and the French Embassy in Korea. This time, the university organized three events: a French‑language book fair, a French speech contest, and a "Gourmet Day" where students could sample French cuisine.
At the French‑language book fair held on May 21 and 22, 142 French‑language books—usually hard to access—were exhibited in Room 208 of the Humanities and Social Sciences Building, categorized into film & art, travel, children's/youth biographies, literature, and gastronomy. Students visited freely and encountered various aspects of French culture through the books.
Notably, the books displayed were selected by professors from the Department of French and African Studies and others, who visited the French Cultural Center in Daejeon to choose titles appropriate for students.
Alongside this, on May 22 at 3:00 p.m. a French speech contest—showcasing students' passion and talent for the language—was held. Many students from the Department of French and African Studies, the Department of Library & Information Science, and the Division of Electronic Engineering participated and presented diverse travel experiences in fluent French on the theme "Travel."
Also, throughout that day the Humanities and Social Sciences Building hosted "Gourmet Day," where students could experience various aspects of French food culture. Students expressed great satisfaction with this unique experience, tasting French dishes and gaining first-hand understanding of French gastronomic culture.
Kang Byung-jae, a third-year student in the Department of French and African Studies who participated in the events, said, "Participating in the book fair was a valuable experience where I could encounter a variety of French authors and works. It was very beneficial because it allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of French literature and culture. I hope these hands-on events will continue so that more students can be exposed to diverse aspects of French culture."
Cho Hwa-rim, Director of the Office of International Affairs, said, "Through the Glocal University Development Project, JBNU has made considerable efforts to strengthen students' international competencies and expand opportunities for overseas employment. We will continue to support students by providing diverse experiences related to France through this program and help broaden their perspectives so they can step onto the global stage."
