Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) (President Yang O-bong) has demonstrated that it possesses world-class competitiveness in the Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, and Natural Sciences fields, as confirmed by the 2024 QS World University Rankings by Subject.

This ranking was compiled by the UK university ranking organization QS (Quacquarelli Symonds). It evaluated the academic fields of 1,561 universities worldwide by dividing them into five broad subject areas and 55 detailed subjects. The assessment combined five indicators: academic reputation and employer reputation, citations per paper, H-INDEX (measuring researchers’ productivity and impact), and IRN (an indicator of research capacity through partnerships with overseas research institutions).

In this evaluation, JBNU placed within the top 300 worldwide in Natural Sciences among the five broad subject areas (Arts & Humanities, Engineering & Technology, Life Sciences & Medicine, Natural Sciences, Social Sciences & Management). It also ranked within the top 400 in Engineering & Technology and in Life Sciences & Medicine.

Last year JBNU had two of the five broad subject areas ranked. This year, with Life Sciences & Medicine newly entering the rankings, JBNU’s research competitiveness across fields appears to be expanding.

At the same time, among the 55 detailed subjects, 11 subjects were ranked again this year, placing JBNU third among regional flagship national universities.

In particular, five subjects—Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, Life Sciences, and Chemistry—ranked first among regional flagship national universities, underscoring JBNU’s subject-specific competitiveness.

President Yang O-bong stated, 'This evaluation shows that JBNU is gaining world-class competitiveness across a range of academic fields, with new subject areas entering the global rankings.' He added, 'We will intensify research support so that JBNU can achieve world-leading research competitiveness, and I will strive to have at least five academic fields enter the global top 100 during my term.'
