Shortly after his inauguration last year, Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) President Yang Oh-bong began close-engagement initiatives with students—including Hope Day events, a 1,000-won Breakfast, and midterm snack distribution events—which proved highly satisfying to students. This year he again organized a "Communication Day" event to listen to students' varied opinions in an informal setting, receiving strong student support.
On the first day of classes, March 4, 2024, President Yang continued close engagement by distributing snacks to students arriving for their first day of the 2024 academic year. A month later, on the evening of April 4, 2024, he invited student council officers to dinner for an informal conversation.
That evening, President Yang, the Director of Student Affairs, and other key administrative faculty met students at a restaurant near the university district. About 50 members of the student self-governing body, including Student Council President Jeong Tae-hyun and other officers, attended.
Students spoke candidly over beers with President Yang, raising proposals related to student welfare and other concerns. President Yang and the faculty members responsible for student affairs listened and took notes.
Student Council President Jeong Tae-hyun said, "With the new semester beginning, there were many matters requiring communication with the University Headquarters regarding student welfare. Having dinner with the President allowed us to directly present the students' pressing needs, and it was very beneficial." He added, "I hope opportunities for direct communication will continue."
President Yang Oh-bong said, "I intend to make this year the inaugural year of a student-centered university, and to put that commitment into practice. I plan to hold such gatherings frequently to meet students more closely and hear as many of their stories as possible." He added, "I will continue to create opportunities to meet directly with students to lay the foundation for realizing a student-centered university."
