Future talents in the fields of science and technology have begun to take flight at JBNU. The JBNU-affiliated Center for Gifted Education in Science (Director Professor Son Hong-chan) held the 2024 entrance ceremony at the JBNU Academic and Cultural Hall on March 23, 2024, and began a one-year advanced and mentored program.
Approximately 200 people, including local sixth-grade elementary students and first- and second-year middle school students participating in the program and their parents, attended the ceremony. Director Son Hong-chan delivered remarks and provided an overview of the curriculum.
This year, a total of 158 students enrolled: 52 in the Elementary Advanced Program, 73 in the Secondary Advanced Program, and 33 in the Secondary Mentored Program. Students in the advanced program will receive more than 100 instructional hours of gifted education over one year, including STEAM education, SW convergence education, and project-based inquiry activities.
Additionally, the mentored program, intended for students in the advanced program who demonstrate outstanding giftedness, offers more than 80 instructional hours of education in the form of research projects.
At the ceremony, JBNU Center for Gifted Education in Science Director Son Hong-chan said, "At our Center for Gifted Education in Science, students will experience a higher level of learning across a very wide range of subjects — including mathematics, science, engineering, and the humanities — on topics they have not encountered before." He added, "We will do our utmost to help gifted students in science grow into leaders for the region and the country through education."
Meanwhile, the Center for Gifted Education in Science was established in 1998 within the Institute of Science Education at JBNU's College of Education as the 'JBNU Center for Gifted Education in Science.' It was elevated to a JBNU-affiliated institution, the 'Center for Gifted Education in Science,' in 2002, and this year marks its 27th year of operation. To date, a total of 5,392 students have completed the program, establishing it as the leading institution for science gifted education in the Jeonbuk region.
