“I'm so happy that with increased support from the university and the alumni association this year, I can have breakfast without worrying about the cost.”
Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) (President 양오봉), which was selected last year for the “1,000-Won Breakfast” program organized by the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and the Korea Agency of Education, Promotion and Information for Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, is expanding its support for the program this year to provide the 1,000-Won Breakfast to more students.
As a pledge by President 양오봉 to realize student-centered welfare, JBNU provided the 1,000-Won Breakfast to 150 students per day last year, totaling 17,400 recipients. This year, with strong commitment to the program from JBNU, the Jeonbuk National University Alumni Association (Chair 최병선), the Jeonbuk National University Development Foundation, and alumni donations, support has been expanded to 200 students per day, totaling about 24,000 people.
On the day the 1,000-Won Breakfast program officially began, the 200 meal vouchers available on a first-come, first-served basis via the It's Me app sold out, and additional vouchers were sold on site, demonstrating strong student response.
From 8:20 a.m. that morning at Huseonggwan, JBNU's student cafeteria, President 양오봉, Alumni Association Chair 최병선, and other key university and alumni officials personally joined students for their first-semester breakfasts, sharing time for communication and encouragement.
The menu for the 1,000-Won Breakfast included dried pollack and tofu soup, stir-fried beef bulgogi with glass noodles, braised quail eggs, and fruit salad. It was a nutritious and satisfying meal suitable for breakfast.
The 1,000-Won Breakfast is a program in which the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs and universities jointly provide a high-quality breakfast for college students with high rates of missed morning meals at a cost of 1,000 won, aiming to promote habitual breakfast consumption and to expand rice consumption culture.
This year, government support per meal was increased from 1,000 won to 2,000 won, and the per-meal unit cost rose from 4,500 won to 5,000 won, which is expected to enable the provision of higher-quality breakfasts to more students.
President 양오봉, who joined students that day, said, “I am pleased that we can start the new semester with the 1,000-Won Breakfast together with students by further increasing the scale of support this year. We will continue to expand support so that more students can benefit.”
Jeonbuk National University Alumni Association Chair 최병선 said, “We are pleased that the 1,000-Won Breakfast, which our alumni association initiated and helped spread, can benefit even more students than last year. We will gather alumni support to try to expand the program to provide midterm exam snacks and evening meals so that more junior students can start their days well.”
