The Council of Presidents of National Key Public Universities (Chair: Kim Il-hwan, President of Jeju National University, hereinafter the Council) held the 1st Regular Meeting of 2024 at the Grand Hyatt Jeju on the 2nd.
At the regular meeting, the presidents discussed joint response measures for cultivating talent in public and essential medical care.
The presidents exchanged views on measures to address the problem that, due to the concentration of medical resources in the Seoul metropolitan area, the number of intern and resident positions at regional university hospitals falls far short of regional medical school enrollment.
The Council proposed the following solutions: raising the intern and resident quotas at regional national hospitals; introducing a regional fee schedule system (such as increasing medical fees in medically underserved areas); and strengthening curricula for public and essential medical care. It decided to recommend these measures to the Ministry of Education.
Meanwhile, the Council is a consultative body composed of the presidents of South Korea's ten national key public universities. Member institutions — Kangwon National University, Kyungpook National University, Gyeongsang National University, Pusan National University, Seoul National University, Chonnam National University, Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), Jeju National University (chair institution), Chungnam National University, and Chungbuk National University — work to strengthen cooperation among national key public universities and contribute to higher education and national development.
