Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) (President Yang Oh-bong), which has established itself as a spearhead in promoting Korean residential culture by exporting hanok to countries such as Vietnam, Algeria, and the United States, has decided to export hanok to Russia as well.
JBNU, which is currently carrying out more than 20 hanok export projects in some 10 countries, including Australia, Sydney in the United States, New Zealand, and Indonesia, is broadening the horizons of hanok globalization.
JBNU Hanok Project Group (Director Nam Hae-gyeong) announced on the 19th that it recently signed an agreement at the Gochang Campus with companies founded by graduates of JBNU's hanok program, including Hanokyeon Co., Ltd., construction company Eastplus Co., Ltd., and Korcentre Co., Ltd., a Russian local subsidiary. The agreement focuses on hanok exports, the promotion of hanok culture, and student exchanges.
Under the agreement, JBNU and three other institutions will construct hanok and a hanok village in Russia, develop various content, and introduce Korean-style residential culture, including hanok, to Russia.
They also agreed to support the domestic study abroad of Russian students who wish to study hanok and to cooperate on importing Russian pine for use in JBNU's hanok production and educational materials.
In particular, through this agreement, they plan not only to disseminate Korean hanok in Russia but also to train Russian students in hanok construction and prepare them for deployment to third countries. This is expected to contribute to the sustainable globalization of hanok.
Nam Hae-gyeong, Director of the JBNU Hanok Project Group, said, "This agreement is significant not only because it will export hanok to Russia and establish a hanok village to promote Korea's outstanding architectural culture, but also because it advances the training of hanok professionals targeting Russian students. We will make every effort to promote not only hanok architecture but also Korea's excellent residential culture worldwide."
Park Jeong-ho, Chairman of Korcentre Co., Ltd., one of the partner companies, said, "We are pleased to export Korea's outstanding hanok to Russia and to provide opportunities for Russian students to study hanok at JBNU. We will do our utmost to supply high-quality Russian pine as educational and production materials."
