Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) has decided to freeze undergraduate tuition for the 2024 academic year to fulfill its social responsibility as a flagship university leading regional development and to share social hardship during difficult times.

This is the 16th year that JBNU has frozen tuition since 2009. In 2012, it reduced tuition by 5.6%.

On January 5, JBNU held a Tuition Review Committee meeting. The committee members agreed that, although the prolonged tuition freeze has placed the university's finances under severe strain, sharing this social hardship is the responsibility of a regional national university that aspires to be a flagship institution, given the burdens on parents and students amid high inflation and other challenging economic conditions.

Instead, JBNU plans to address the continuing deterioration of university finances and budget shortfalls caused by a sharp decline in the school-age population through efforts such as securing government financial support programs, obtaining research funding, and fundraising for development funds.

President Yang O-bong said, 'As our university aims to be a flagship institution leading regional development, we have decided to freeze tuition for the 16th consecutive year to minimize the financial burden on students and their parents. We will strive to secure and effectively utilize numerous government education support programs and development funds so that the tuition freeze does not affect student education or employment support.'
