The Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Hanok-Style International Convention Center, which broke ground in 2018, held its opening ceremony at 5:00 p.m. on August 23.
The opening ceremony was attended by President Kim Dong-won, senior university officials, faculty, staff, and students, who joined in the celebration.
The JBNU International Convention Center occupies the former ROTC site and has a total floor area of 6,008 m², with two basement levels and one aboveground floor. It houses one large convention hall, nine seminar rooms, and various amenities such as a coffee shop and restaurant. The aboveground structure was built in the traditional Hanok style to align with the region's cultural context, while the underground levels were designed as spaces for hosting domestic and international academic conferences and seminars.
In particular, the large convention hall on the second basement level can accommodate up to 500 people at once, enabling the hosting of international academic events. The first basement level includes exhibition and practice spaces for cultural and artistic practitioners, which are expected to make a significant contribution to the development of the region's cultural content industry.
The center is also located overlooking Jeonju Deokjin Park and houses facilities where visitors can enjoy tea and food, and it has already received a strong positive response as a new place for relaxation for university members and local residents.
The opening event included a progress report on the project to date, commendations for meritorious contributors, and an unveiling ceremony to commemorate the opening.
President Kim Dong-won said, "The International Convention Center was built in the Hanok style, preserving the elegance of tradition. It is equipped with a convention facility capable of hosting international conferences and seminar rooms of various sizes, making it possible to hold academic symposia 365 days a year. I am confident it will be a great asset to JBNU, which aims to be a research-oriented university, as well as to the local community organizing a variety of events."
He added, "Since facilities where visitors can enjoy tea and food are also in place amid the beautiful scenery, I hope this will become a place where university members and local residents can recharge their energy for healing. JBNU will do its utmost to walk together warmly with the local community."
