Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is calling for submissions to two literary awards — the 'Garam Lee Byeong-gi Young Poetry Award' and the 'Choi Myung-hee Young Fiction Award' (hereinafter, the literary awards) — with total prize money of KRW 8,000,000.

The awards, jointly organized by the JBNU University Press & Broadcasting Service, the Honbul Memorial Project Association (President Kim Byung-yong), and the Choi Myung-hee Literary Museum, will accept entries through August 31, 2022. The competition categories are poetry and short fiction for university students and high school students. Poetry submissions must include at least three poems (including sijo); short fiction submissions must include at least one work. Entries may be submitted in person to the editorial office of the JBNU University Press & Broadcasting Service or by mail. Winning works will be announced in the JBNU University Press special issue commemorating the university's founding (scheduled for October 12, 2022).

JBNU has administered these literary awards since 2001 to commemorate Garam Lee Byeong-gi, the poet known as the 'Orchid Poet', and Choi Myung-hee, author of Honbul, and to carry on their literary legacy.

The awards trace their origins to the 'JBNU University Press Student Works Contest', which has been held since 1955. Choi Myung-hee herself was a past winner, having won in 1971 with her work 'Jeongok-i'.

This literary prize has served as a prominent gateway for emerging writers in the Korean literary scene. Novelists Kwon Sang-hyeok, Kim Bo-hyun, Kim Hak-chan, Son Hong-kyu, Lee Gap-su, Jeon A-ri, and Heo Tae-yeon, and poets Park Seong-jun, Baek Sang-ung, Lee Hye-mi, and Jo Yul, among others, have emerged from this award. High school division winners have also achieved strong results in various youth-focused competitions and writing contests.
