Graduate student Song Yoo-hoon (Department of Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Research Laboratory; supervisor Professor Guk Kyung-su) received the Excellent Paper Award at the Power System Research Committee of the Korean Institute of Electrical Engineers' 2022 Spring Conference.
At the conference held in Jeju in April, Song presented a paper titled 'Analysis of Primary Reserve Replacement Effects Considering the Deployment Status of Energy Storage Systems in the Domestic Power System' and was recently notified of its selection as an excellent paper.
This study analyzed a plan and its effects for utilizing a 336 MW battery-type frequency-regulation ESS—the largest such system currently in operation worldwide—in the domestic power system as primary reserve, the highest-performing reserve needed to ensure a stable supply of electrical energy.
* ESS: Energy Storage System that stores electricity generated by solar and wind power in batteries for use during temporary electricity shortages.
Given the domestic power system's increasing need to secure reserve capacity as renewable energy expands, the research findings are expected to provide a technical basis for using highly responsive ESS as a reserve resource.
This research is the result of the project 'Measures to Improve Power System Standards and Market Mechanisms for Promoting Renewable Energy and Expanding System Hosting Capacity', which is being carried out jointly by Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) Power Systems Research Laboratory with industry and research partners—supported by the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy—including the Korea Electrotechnology Research Institute, Korea Power Exchange, and the Korea Electric Power Research Institute. The study examined the applicability of ESS as one of the power system response measures to prepare for the energy transition era.
