Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) and Busan University of Foreign Studies jointly organized the "2022 JBNU Southeast Asian Language Camp" and are accepting course applications online (Google Form) through June 10, 2022.

The language camp, held at the JBNU Jeonju Campus from July 18–20, 2022, will provide intensive instruction in seven government-designated special foreign languages: Malay‑Indonesian, Vietnamese, Thai, Khmer (Cambodian), Burmese (Myanmar), as well as Arabic and Italian.

In addition to 40 hours of language instruction, the program will include expert lectures to enhance understanding of the Southeast Asian region and graduate school admission briefings to foster the next generation of scholars in Southeast Asian studies.

Instruction is provided free of charge. The Special Foreign Languages Project Group of Busan University of Foreign Studies (Director: Bae Yang‑su) will cover instructor fees and textbook costs. JBNU will provide instructor accommodation and camp operating expenses through the National University Promotion Project, and the Jeonbuk National University Institute for Southeast Asian Studies (Director: Jeon Je‑seong) will provide expert lectures.

The Southeast Asian Language Camp began as a summer camp in 2019 and was held a total of five times during summer and winter breaks through 2021. During that period, 301 students received instruction in special foreign languages. Participants included undergraduate and graduate students, researchers, and professors affiliated with 31 universities, including JBNU, Seoul National University, Yonsei University, and Korea University (13 national/public universities, 17 private universities, and 2 foreign universities), as well as members of the general public such as lawyers, activists, and journalists. The program has received strong interest and high satisfaction.

This year the summer camp will also offer "language taster" briefings for the seven languages. Camp instructors will directly introduce the languages they teach. The "2022 Southeast Asian Language Summer Camp: Language Taster" briefings will be held on May 30 and 31, 2022, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. via real-time Zoom video lectures. At the end of the May 31 briefing there will be an introduction to camp operations and a question-and-answer session.
