Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) is calling for submissions to the literary awards 'Garam Lee Byeong-gi Young Poetry Award' and 'Choi Myeong-hee Young Fiction Award' (hereinafter, the Literary Awards), with total prize money of KRW 8,000,000.

The JBNU University Press & Broadcasting Service, together with the Honbul Memorial Association and the Choi Myeong-hee Literature Museum (Director Choi Ki-woo), jointly organize this competition. Submissions will be accepted until August 31, 2022.

The competition has poetry and short-story categories for both college and high school divisions. For poetry, entrants must submit at least three poems, including sijo. For short fiction, at least one story must be submitted. Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners. Winning works will be published in a special issue commemorating the university's founding of The JBNU Newspaper (scheduled for October 12, 2022). Works may be submitted in person to the Editorial Office of the JBNU University Press & Broadcasting Service or sent by mail.

JBNU has been running the Literary Awards since 2001 to commemorate 'Orchid Poet' Garam Lee Byeong-gi, who made a monumental contribution to Korean literary history, and Choi Myeong-hee, author of Honbul, and to carry on their literary spirit. In particular, on the occasion of JBNU's 70th anniversary in 2017, the total prize money was significantly increased from KRW 6,500,000 to KRW 8,000,000.

The precursor to these Literary Awards was the 'JBNU Newspaper Student Works Competition,' which had been held since 1955. Author Choi Myeong-hee also received the honor of winning in 1971 with her novel 'Jeongok-i.'

This Literary Awards has served as a reliable gateway for discovering major new writers in the Korean literary scene. Novelists Kwon Sang-hyuk, Kim Bo-hyun, Kim Hak-chan, Son Hong-gyu, Lee Gap-su, Jeon A-ri, and Heo Tae-yeon, and poets Park Seong-jun, Baek Sang-woong, Lee Hye-mi, and Jo Yul are among its alumni.

High school award winners have also achieved strong results in various youth-focused contests and writing competitions, including the Kim Seung-ok Literary Award, the Kim Yu-jeong Writing Contest, the Daesan College Literary Award, the Manhae Festival National High School Writing Contest, the Munhakdongne Youth Literature Award, the Park Jae-sam Youth Literature Award, the Suju Youth Literature Award, the Yun Dong-ju Writing Contest, the National Ji-yong Youth Literature Award, the Korea Youth Screenplay Competition, and the Korea Youth Literature Award.
