The Natural History Museum (Director, Professor Hwang Seong-su) will operate a botanical illustration class for local residents starting on the 7th of next month and is recruiting participants.
Botanical illustration is an artwork that delicately depicts the scientific characteristics of plants while incorporating the artist's aesthetic sensibility.
Now in its fourth iteration, the program has been highly popular, with applications filling up early each time. Participants have praised it as an opportunity to satisfy intellectual curiosity through plant observation, to escape everyday stress by immersing themselves in their work, and to gain a sense of achievement and confidence.
This year the course will focus on the life cycle of plants. Just as humans have life cycles, plants also undergo lifespan stages. Observing the plant's full life cycle—from seed and germination to growth and reproduction through photosynthesis—is expected to provide an opportunity to appreciate the value and preciousness of life.
The course will be offered free of charge in basic and advanced levels. Applications open from the 23rd; applicants should download the application form from the Natural History Museum website (https://nhm.jbnu.ac.kr) under the Participation section's Notices, complete it, and submit it either in person or by email (nhm@jbnu.ac.kr).
Hwang Seong-su, Director of the Natural History Museum at Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), said, "I hope it will be a meaningful time to observe how plants change over time and to understand plant structures such as leaves, stems, and flowers," adding, "I will continue to make efforts to communicate with the local community through various exhibitions and educational programs."
