Graduate student Chang‑Young Lee, a member of the BK21 Project Division for Green‑Bio Talent Training in Control of Plant and Animal Hazard Factors (Project Director Professor Jae‑Su Kim) and a master's student in the Department of Agricultural Convergence Technology, College of Agriculture and Life Sciences, under the supervision of Professor Dong‑Ho Seo, won the Best Award in the master's category at the Excellent Paper Selection Competition held at the 2022 Spring Conference organized by the Korean Society of Food and Industrial Engineering.

The Korean Society of Food and Industrial Engineering is an academic society that provides a forum for the exchange and sharing of knowledge to promote and disseminate theoretical, technological, and industrialization research across the food and life‑related sciences (engineering) and industries, thereby contributing to the academic and industrial development of the Korean food industry.

The Excellent Paper Award presented at the conference recognizes students who have demonstrated outstanding academic achievements and performance in the fields of food/biological sciences and engineering and who have presented their own research results with distinction.

Graduate student Chang‑Young Lee presented a paper titled 'Development of Radioiodine Remediation using Recombinant Radiation-resistant Bacteria harboring Amylousucrase' at the conference.

This study involved introducing a sucrose‑activating enzyme with high applicability in the food field into radiation‑resistant bacteria. Using this approach, the study aims to develop a technology to remove radioactive iodine that is difficult to treat and recover.

This research was conducted through a collaborative study with the “Molecular Rearrangement Glucan Materialization Laboratory (Principal Investigator Professor Cheon‑Seok Park, Kyung Hee University),” a project selected as a 2021 Basic Research Laboratory. Graduate student Chang‑Young Lee and his advisor, Professor Dong‑Ho Seo of Jeonbuk National University (JBNU), participated in the Basic Research Laboratory and are conducting various glucan materialization and application studies using biotechnological techniques.

Meanwhile, the BK21 Project Division of the Department of Agricultural Convergence Technology is working to cultivate advanced researchers with expertise in control technologies for hazards in agricultural and livestock food products and to secure core technologies related to such control technologies, based on solving industrial and social problems, in order to elevate the status of agriculture in the Fourth Industrial Revolution era.
