Jeonbuk National University (JBNU) President Kim Dong-won, who meets students in person every year to engage in face-to-face communication, met with students on the afternoon of March 21 to mark the start of the new semester. The meeting was held with Student Council President Jang Kyung-su and other student council officers to discuss measures for the smooth academic operation of 2022.
The meeting, which began at 4:30 p.m. and lasted more than an hour and a half, saw students raise suggestions for improvements in each college. President Kim and the administrative faculty responded in a "Rapid-Fire Q&A" format.
At the meeting, students requested safe academic operations amid COVID-19, the provision of lecture materials, support for COVID-19 test kits, and measures to prevent motorcycle accidents in the area around Gujeongmun Gate.
In response, the university said it would improve systems such as providing lecture materials and maintaining the LMS to protect the academic participation rights of students confirmed with COVID-19, and it also promised to provide self-test kits for safe student activities.
President Kim specifically urged the student council, the Division of Student Support, and the Division of General Affairs to work together to develop countermeasures to prevent motorcycle accidents around Gujeongmun Gate.
Student Council President Jang Kyung-su said, "It was a very meaningful opportunity to discuss our requests in one place with the President and administrative faculty and to hear direct, clear answers," adding, "I hope that these dialogue sessions with students for democratic academic governance will continue steadily."
President Kim Dong-won stated, "Because we cannot be aware of all the details of what makes students uncomfortable, we intend to hold such meetings even on an irregular basis to build a safer JBNU that accompanies students," and added, "We will work to promptly address the matters discussed today so that our students can study in better conditions."
